Bedtime Stories is the newest production from Adam Sandler. The movie is rated PG, but in the theater there were plenty of older teens mixed in among the parents and children. It was really fun to see this on New Years Day when the kids were out of school and the theater was full. There's something about seeing a kids movie in a theater full of whispering, shifting, questioning, laughing children that is just good for the soul.
In the movie, Sandler plays a handyman who end up telling bedtime stories to his niece and nephew, then realizes the stories are coming true. He tries to manipulate the kids stories to affect his life, with touching and funny results.
You know how almost every romantic comedy or kids comedy has that part 3/4 of the way through the movie that makes me want to cry because it's so horrible and sad? Well, one of the things I like about Adam Sandler's movies is that he is really good at making the subplot of the movie not just sad, but really touching and easy to relate to. Maybe it's partly because some of thep lots involve kids, but Sandler certainly knows how to break heart (just ask the past me who sobbed the entire car ride home from seeing Spanglish)? This movie isn't quite THAT sad, but the expected downer that has to be resolved is unusual - not at all annoying, and not that stupid seeming.
I also have a thing for Keri Russell ever since I saw Waitress (great movie). She is just adorable and I think she's a good actress - although August Rush might not have been the best example. Actually it wasn't her that I didn't like as much as the pedophile resembling Robin Williams character. But that it not the subject here... she was charming and adorable in this movie.
If you have kids 6 and up, they're sure to enjoy this holiday tale. It's a great movie to share with kids anwhere from that age up, 10 year olds and teenagers alike! A great and feel-good time for your Christmas break.
