Baby Shower!

What: My Baby Shower! Planned by Mom, Kira, Tara & Brooke, who did a GREAT job.

Where: Tara's house. Really cute animal decorations and awesome food... Brooke made her famous Guacamole & a really delicious red velvet cake (the leftovers are in my kitchen right now), and lots of other yummy treats.

Who: Tara, Brooke, Mom & Kira of course. Also Kelly & Mackenna, Brie, Molly, Jen, Lori, Deanna, and Melinda.

It was really, really great. We had food, played some fun games, and hung out. Jen brought her camera and took pictures, which was really great - I posted a few in the photo album, so check them out. We also had my new video camera, and Mom took some video of the shower. I just love all the girls, and every time I get a chance to spend time with them it's great. Of course, it doesn't hurt if it's a party for me!

We got lots of good stuff, and I am feeling less like we don't have ANYTHING ready for the baby. Kira helped bring everything home yesterday, and we stopped on the way and picked up the crib from Brooke & Dave's house. They're still using the matress, but we have the frame now. We also have almost all of the big stuff - we've ordered the dresser and are just waiting for it to come in, we have the stroller & infant seat, the crib, the infant to toddler car seat, the swing that we wanted, the baby bathtub, diaper bag, and Snugli carrier. I looked at our registry and I think that next week after I'm done from work, I'll take a shopping trip to Babies R Us.

It's the first time in a while that I've actually felt excited about going there to buy baby stuff - even though I think this week is goign to be hard at work (busy), I know I only have 5 days left and I can't wait! I think I'm actually accepting the fact that whatever gets done before I leave gets done, and the stuff that doesn't just doesn't and there isn't anything I can do about it. I've been so tired and busy for the last 2 months that I think April is going to be even more welcome. I'm looking forward to finishing getting everything ready, relaxing while I can, and just getting ready for Sam.

I've also been working on our budget and our credit cards and stuff, and am feeling good about all of it. Today I feel rested, relaxed, and for the first day in a while, I feel good about everything that's going on. Maybe instead of thinking about the fact that tomorrow is Monday (which I always do on Sundays), I'll think about the fact that tomorrow is my LAST Monday working! Yay!!

Well, I think I'll go get ready to go out, Brooke and I are going to see "Inside Man" and she's picking me up in half an hour.

New Picture

I just posted a new picture of me at 34 weeks. I looked at it and said to Justin, "Am I really that big?" and he said "yes". I look in the mirror, but looking at a picture like this makes me realize that there's probably a reason that my back is killing me today.

Also, I just ate a grapple. It's some kind of grape apple hybrid or something that someone gave to Justin at work. It was very weird. It smelled like grape, then when I first bit into the piece it tasted like apple, but then when I started chewing it, it tasted like grape too.

Silly Rachael!

Okay. So I was all paranoid about my hours for nothing. It wasn’t anyone wanting to say that it wasn’t okay – it was more “if she is doing that, does she just want to have her last day sooner?”. I told them that I want to plan to be there so I can be a resource for Annae (the person taking over the HR part of my job) and to make the HR Manual (which I have not been able to work on last week or yet this week) as complete as possible, but if it gets to Tue or Wed and I’m done and really not doing anything, then I can leave sooner.

I have been a little off today… I don’t know what it is, but it’s partly because my back hurts. It’s weird, some days I feel pretty normal aside from my stomach being large. Other days I feel REALLY pregnant and sore and tired, like today. I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. I’m also a little stressed about Justin’s new job and his business etc. It’s not that I’m worried about it, it’s just so much new so fast. I don’t really know a lot about having a sole proprietorship or an LLC, and of course with starting up either and with the stuff he needs to do his job (laptop, memory, computer stuff etc) we are spending a lot of money. I know it’s just one time things, and I am still really glad that it’s happening, but it’s one of those things where it’s just not ‘the norm’, especially since we’ve been on a tight budget for the last six months. It’s sort of like how it’s still hard even now to force myself to eat so much since in the past I was always trying to eat less.

So, I’m still a crazy pregnant lady, but things are good. I can’t wait to see everyone this weekend at my shower – I am SO excited!

Only 6 More Weeks

I had my 34 week doctor appointment today. Everything's good, the baby's heartrate was 150 just like always, and my stomach is still growing. Also, I gained four pounds this time, which is probably good! So... overall, I lost 35 pounds, and have gained back six. So I'm still down 29 from where I started. That's crazy. I thought the doctor appointment went well, I actually talked to the doctor more this time a little bit about having the baby and my classes, and some about circumcision too.

We had our second baby class last night. We did some practice of some positions for labor and breathing, and talked about drugs. I haven't really changed my mind much about the drugs. Basically, I am really going to try and do it without, I don't necessarily want to have an epidural, but if I feel like it's too much, or if the labor ends up being hard or very long, I won't be disappointed in myself if I decide to have the epidural. I'm just trying to have the same attitude about everything - that I have ideas about what I want, but it all depends on the situation and how things go, and to not set myself up to be disappointed. It's kind of the same thing with breastfeeding. I am definitely going to try and do it, but try not to feel bad if there are problems, if I need help, or if it can't work for some reason. I don't expect that to happen, but as long as I consider all of the possibilities, I can be at least a little bit prepared.

Despite all of that, I am still very nervous about the actual birth. My doctor said 'You will be fine, you are going to have the baby and it will be fine". He said what I try to think, which is that people do this all the time, and I can too. Also, like he said, it's different for everyone, and you never know how it's going to be until it's happening.

Today I got a great present in the mail - our car seat was delivered! I knew that it had been bought for me as a gift, and I promised not to open it until after the shower, but of course you can see what it is from the box. It's exciting to have one of our first new, big things. Everyone has been so generous so far. All of the things people have gotten for us, and of the things we've gotten from Brooke and Dave are so helpful and great! I can't wait until I'm off work and can start getting more ready around the house.

I also got another great present today from Justin - a video camera! I have been saying for a while that I wanted to get one and thinking about it, and he got a nice, small one at Comp USA when he was there today. Since it was brand new, and they only had one in the store, we got a free two pack of videos since it had been on display for a couple of days. It's brand new though since not many people had looked at it yet. I'm glad we got it. We'll play around with it and use it some at first, but I'll like having it when Sam gets a little bit older.

What else? Not much. I'm still working full time as of now. I told my boss last week that I didn't want to work full hours next week, and she was going to check on it with her boss, but she didn't do it until Monday, and then today she came and told me she had an answer and we could talk about it tomorrow. Which I assume means that someone didn't like the idea of me not working full hours next week. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I wasn't too happy with it... it's so hard, and I'm physically and mentally exhausted and at the end of this week will have had 2 entire weeks of overlap with my HR replacement, who is doing really great. She's very smart, and I don't really see her having many problems when I'm gone. She seems to be picking everything up well, and has good questions. I'm sure there will be breakdowns, but I think she'll be able to fix them with ease and get things right again. Anyhow... I'm just really ready to be done I guess. So we'll see what happens when I talk to my boss tomorrow.

Well, I'm off - I want to go get some cereal before I go to bed tonight. More soon!

Big Update

I can't believe it's been over a week since I wrote again (maybe almost 2). I'm at my Mom's house in Bellingham right now. Mom went out to breakfast with Kira and some other people and Justin and I were too lazy to get up early. Justin's still sleeping, so I'm just hanging around here. I'm starting to get hungry too.

Things have just been a little bit crazy for the past 2 weeks, which is why I haven't updated. So, here's what's been going on with the Heiners...

On Tuesday the 7th (I think that's the last time I wrote), Justin's friend Sung called him to ask if he could go to Costa Rica that weekend! Justin and Sung have a great opportunity with a company in Arizona to do some developing - computer programming and web design stuff. It was really short notice, but Justin flew to Costa Rica on Thursday the 9th, and met people from the company they'll be working with. Last week he signed a 2 year contract. What does all this mean? Well, Justin put in his 2 weeks notice at T-Mobile last Tuesday and will be starting his own business consulting, and working at home. The whole thing happened pretty fast, and in it's own way has been a little scary, but I feel like it's the right decision. This is what Justin really wants to do, and what he's wanted to do for a long time, and if we didn't take the opportunity when it came up we'd regret it later. Plus I kind of figured that whether it was now, or 5 years from now, it would be scary for him to leave his job and go out on his own. So far things are going very well, and I know he's really excited about it. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it is a bump in salary, which of course is helpful since I won't be working.

I've been in my last stretch of work at Raising More Money, and am more than ready to be done. I now have 2 weeks left, and am hoping that the last week will be not full time. I'm just ready to be done. I want to make sure I get everything passed along, because I don't want there to be problems after I'm gone, but there is another part of me that just wants to rest, and not get up at 6:30 in the morning anymore, and actually be able to do things during the week besides collapsing on the couch tired when I get home from work. I haven't gotten much done since I've had things every weekend as well.

Last weekend Mom came down to visit and we hung out, Saturday was Brooke's birthday so I spent time with them, and Sunday I went to the arboretum with Mom, Keith, and Kira then to the movies with Brooke. It was pretty full.

Monday Justin got back from Costa Rica around 6:00 and then we had our first baby class at 7:00. There are only 4 classes on Monday nights, so it ends up being 8 hours total. It was pretty good. In some ways it made me feel better - knowing the stages of labor, and when it's time to start timing the contractions, and when it's time to call the doctor/go to the hospital. But in other ways hearing all the information and watching the video of a couple going through labor also made me feel just as nervous and scared as I've been feeling. I just keep reminding myself that people do it all the time, but in a part of my brain it all sounds so impossible.

Now it's the weekend again. Yesterday Justin and I drove up to Bellingham to go to Rob's wedding celebration. I haven't written about it here, but Rob and Susan got married on February 16. They are expecting a little girl in July. I think today we'll go out to lunch with Justin's Dad & Niece, and then head back down to Redmond. We're going to stop at Babies R Us on the way back. We've had a little snafu with the dresser we wanted, and it looks like they're not getting any more in until mid-April. Since I don't want to wait that long, we're going to go today and see if there is something else that we like instead. Hopefully we'll find something, I don't think we are all that picky.

So, that's the scoop! Things are going well in general. Sam is doing good as far as I can tell, he moves around all the time, and I've been growing the right amount at my doctors appointments. Last Wednesday night I started to have some back pain and suddenly couldn't lie down on my back at all without it hurting. It's crazy how things happen so suddenly. I'm starting to have trouble sleeping - waking up a lot to change from side to side, and waking up a lot to go to the bathroom. The body pillow has definitely become one of my best friends. I think now I'm at the point where nothing is going to really get easier, but it will be easier when I'm off work and don't have to worry about the fact that I'm not sleeping as well since I'll be able to take naps and sleep longer if I need to.

My next doctor appointment is on Tuesday afternoon, I'll be 34 weeks on Tuesday. SIX WEEKS! Does not seem like a lot of time anymore. It's not necessarily hitting me how close that is - I think that the Saturday after my last day of work, I'm going to wake up and freak out because there wont' be anything distracting me from the things we need to get done and how soon our little guy is going to come into the world.

Well, my shoulders are getting sore from where I'm sitting, so I'm going to wrap it up and try to find something to eat. I hope that all is well with everyone out there reading this, and I will try to update more often!

Eighth Month Pregnancy Reflections

My pregnancy classes are:
Going well so far. We've had 2 classes out of the four, and we both like our teacher.

In the classes, I've learned how to:
freak out more about giving birth. Just kidding. We've learned about the stages of labor, and talked about different comfort measures, which is good. I like hearing about the actual stages of labor and when things happen, because it makes me feel more prepared.

What I've bought for you so far:
Not much! I am waiting for the baby shower and until I'm off work to do most of my shopping. I have bought one very cute onesie and the lamp to match the bedding set, but that's about it so far!

What other people have bought for you:
Grandma Edie has bought 2 CD's - one music, and one a voice recording of the Velveteen Rabbit that I had when I was little, as well as an awesome pair of blue and orange plaid tennis shoes. Grandma Helene has bought lots of clothes, and threw me a surprise baby shower at Christmas time! I got the bedding set, some very cute stuffed bears, some books and other good things. And, it wasn't 'bought for you', but we have received lots of things from Brooke & Dave, who I'm sure will be somewhat lifesavers in the $ department for us! We can thank them for the stroller, infant seat, bouncy chair, lots of clothes, and eventually a crib & probably high chair! I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out, but I have an excuse... my memory is not what it used to be!

The strangest food craving I've had during this pregnancy is:
It's not really a craving, but Cheetos taste really good to me now.

The strangest piece of advice I've gotten since this pregnancy started is:
Still haven't gotten much strange advice. Today someone told me to sleep whenever the baby sleeps to get more rest, but that is not strange advice, I'm pretty sure it's just good advice!

At my prenatal visit, I learned:
That the baby is right on schedule! My last appointment was at 30 weeks, he measured right on target, I finally gained weight (even if it was only 1.5 pounds), and the heartbeat was right on. Also, my doctor shaved off the beard which he suddenly had at my 26 week appointment, and I was kind of happy about that.

My hopes:
That the next four weeks of work will go by fast, but then miraculously time will slow for the month of April to give me time to relax and get ready for Sam.

8 More Weeks?

I had my 32 week doctor appointment today. That's right, I said THIRTY TWO weeks. Only eight more weeks. That's less than 2 months. Holy cow. I can't believe how fast time has gone by. Everything's still good. I didn't really gain more weight - 1/2 a pound maybe, but the baby's definitely growing. My stomach's measuring 32 weeks, and the baby's heartrate is still 150 just like always. I feel him moving all the time now, and it's great. Now I feel kicks and stuff sometimes, but also when he shifts I sometimes feel big sweeping motions.

I am so excited. I can't believe in only 8 weeks there's going to be a little baby in my arms. I didn't know if I would enjoy pregnancy that much after the first five months were so rough. But I'm definitely in a place now where everything is good. I'm not sick, but I'm not uncomfortable yet. I'm just enjoying it. I guess this is the part where you think, hey, I definitely won't mind being pregnant again someday, because you forget the yucky stuff. I'm just happy.

We start our baby class next week. It's four weeks long, Monday nights from 7 - 9. I suspect that after we start the class I'll actually have some questions for my doctor at my appointments since I really haven't up to this point. I think I'm a pretty easy patient. I feel pretty confident. I have the usual nervousness and fear, but I think that being around my friend's kids as they're growing up and especially being around Seamus and Lorelai pretty much since they were born has made me a lot less worried about being able to handle taking care of a baby. I still feel like I have a lot to do, but work has been so hectic, especially the last two days, that I can't get anything done at home. Mom is coming down next weekend and she said she'll help me with some stuff around the house.

I still have 3 weeks of work left after this week. I didn't realize how hard it would be. I don't feel like being at work anymore already... I have no idea how people can work up to their due dates. All I want to do is relax and get ready. I've been so tired during the week - when I leave work I'm just drained. In a way my job has gotten a lot more stressful in the last two weeks because while I filled both of the positions to replace me, I now have to come up with training plans for two different people at once and find time to write an HR Manual before I go. It's just a lot on my plate, but I'm not willing to work more than 8 hour days at this point either. So, we'll see how the next couple of weeks go.

The only 'sad day in sports' for me

I just heard breaking news during the Keith Olbermann show that Kirby Puckett died of a stroke today at age 44. For those of you who don't know, Kirby Puckett played for the Minnesota Twins, and is, without a doubt, my favorite sports star ever. My sister and I both loved Kirby, she even had a Kirby Puckett jersey. The best thing I ever saw during any sports game was Kirby Puckett hitting an in-park homerun. It is hard to believe that someone so compact could run SO FAST, and round all the bases. I don't think I'll ever see anything better in a baseball game. I realized when I heard this that he's probably the only sports figure whose death I would care much about - for those who know me, you know that sports is not exactly my thing. But I really do feel like it's a 'sad day in sports' now.

Here are some highlights from the story that was promptly put up on the first page of cnn.com after the news broke....

(CNN) -- Baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, who helped lead the Minnesota Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991, died Monday after suffering a stroke over the weekend, the team announced. He was 45.

"Kirby's impact on the Twins organization, state of Minnesota and upper Midwest is significant and goes well beyond his role in helping the Twins win two world championships," Pohlad said.

"A tremendous teammate, Kirby will always be remembered for his never-ending hustle, infectious personality, trademark smile and commitment to the community. There will never be another 'Puck.' "

In the January phase of the 1982 draft, the Twins selected him third in the first round. He became the ninth player ever to collect four hits in his first game for Minnesota.

In 1991, in Game 6 of the World Series versus Atlanta, Puckett collected three hits, three RBIs and scored two runs and became the ninth player to end a World Series game with a home run on the final pitch, the Twins said.

That home run, in the 11th inning, forced a Game 7, and the Twins collected their second championship in four years the next day.

His .318 lifetime batting average ranked as the highest for any right-handed batter since World War II, according to the site BaseballLibrary.com.

In 2001, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot, becoming the third-youngest living electee in baseball history behind Sandy Koufax and Lou Gehrig.

Academy Awards

I taped the Oscars last night and watched it just now. I actually managed not to hear or see anything about it on the internet or TV today, except for accidentally seeing that 'Crash' won best picture.

Things that are ok:
- Brokeback Mountain won best score, which is definitely true. I have never heard a more beautiful movie.
- It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp won best original song, which is just awesome. Period.
- Ang Lee winning best director for Brokeback Mountain.
- The guys from March of the Penguins all had BIG STUFFED PENGUINS! That was awesome. Also the guy tweeting and saying 'that means thank you in penguin'. AWESOME.
- I'm okay with Phillip Seymore Hoffman winning best actor. He creeps me out, and there was no way in hell I was watching Capote, but I can believe that he was good in that.

Things that are not okay:
- BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN being beaten out for CINEMATOGRAPHY. This was one of the most beatiful, spectacular movies I have ever seen. Seriously.... what the hell?
- Michelle Williams being beaten by Rachel Weisz for best supporting actress. I saw 'The Constant Gardner'. It was okay, but even from the clips they showed... how could you pick her over Michelle Williams?? I didn't see all the movies, but I don't get this one.
- Reese Witherspoon winning best actress over Felicity Huffman. It's just one of those things where I don't feel like she was bad, but the to me in the roles they played I would have gone for Felicity.
- Brokeback Mountain being beat by Crash for best picture. I saw both movies. I'm not saying Crash was not a good movie, but in terms of the whole picture, and impact, and images, and everything, I don't see at all how it beat Brokeback Mountain. I am disappointed.

The Baby Made Me Do It

1. Tear up the other day after talking to a co-worker, and after he left my office thinking "I'm really going to miss him!".

2. Tear up in an interview yesterday thinking about Terry (the CEO of my company) and how great she is.

3. Let the bag boys carry my groceries out to my car. I have NEVER done this before.

4. Think about calling in sick every day so I could just sleep a little more... I never follow through because I have way too much to do.

Sorry I haven't been writing enough. I've been so busy at work that when I get home at night I just want to relax and not sit at the computer, and starting on 2/18 every weekend has something going on at least one of the two days until the end of March.

While I'm thinking about it, the most interesting thing happens on Friday afternoons. I guess I thought of it because it's Friday again! So, during our Friday staff meeting (from 4:30 - 5:00 every week), Sam move LIKE CRAZY. I don't know if it's someone's voice, or all of the voices, or what, but he moves constantly through the whole meeting. And he usually does not move that much during that time of day. It's very interesting! It's nice to look forward to since by the end of Friday I usually am wondering how many more seconds until I get to go home.

I will write more this weekend.
